It has a name. Tetany. And it has a clean physiological explanation.
What's actually happening.
When you breathe more than your body needs, which is what circular breath is designed to do, you exhale carbon dioxide faster than you produce it. Blood CO2 drops. As CO2 drops, blood pH rises (becomes more alkaline). That shift in pH temporarily reduces the amount of free calcium available at your nerve endings.
Calcium is what keeps the threshold high for a nerve to fire. With less free calcium, peripheral nerves, especially in the hands, feet, and face, start firing more easily. You feel tingling. The muscles contract on their own. The fingers curl.
It is not your soul leaving your body. It is your blood chemistry briefly recalibrating.
Why it isn't dangerous in a well-held session.
Tetany is transient. The instant you slow the breath, long exhales, soft jaw, normal pace: CO2 climbs back to baseline within sixty to ninety seconds. Calcium rebinds. Hands open. Nothing was injured. Nothing was permanent.
This is why a trained facilitator never panics when a client claws up. We slow your breath, lengthen the exhale to a count of eight, ask you to soften the jaw and the tongue, and let your chemistry do its work. The whole episode usually resolves in under two minutes.
What it does NOT mean.
- It does not mean you are 'releasing trauma' through your hands. That's a metaphor, not a mechanism.
- It does not mean you went 'deeper' than someone whose hands didn't curl. Tetany is a respiratory artifact, not a spiritual milestone.
- It does not mean breathwork is dangerous for you. It means the dose was a little high for your current chemistry, and that's adjustable in real time.
Why we still let it happen.
Inside the somatic frame, tetany is useful. The clawed hand is a body-level signal that the protective layer has dropped, the autonomic system is in a different gear than usual. That's the window where memory reconsolidation gets accessible, where parts come forward, where the subconscious is reachable. We don't chase tetany. We don't avoid it. We let the body do what it does and we hold the room.
- A clear, non-mystical explanation of what tetany actually is.
- Permission to feel it without thinking something is wrong with you.
- The three things a trained facilitator will say to bring it down: slow the exhale, soften the jaw, soften the tongue.
- Slowing the exhale lets CO2 rebuild within 60-90 seconds.

- Is tetany dangerous?
- Not in a healthy adult in a well-held session. It resolves within 1-2 minutes of restored normal breathing. People with known heart conditions, epilepsy, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or third-trimester pregnancy should not do circular breathwork without medical clearance.
- Will it happen every time?
- No. Tetany depends on your baseline CO2, your breathing pace, and how regulated your nervous system was when you started. Some sessions you'll feel it; many you won't.
- Can I prevent it?
- If you don't want the sensation, slow your breath and emphasize the exhale. The facilitator will guide you through this in the room.
